چکیده

RESUME In this study we have performed in situ optical characterisation of reef waters and adjacent ocean waters and substratum type and cover. Next we developed an inversion optimisation method to infer water column composition, bathymetry and per pixel unmixing of substratum type and/or cover using MERIS FR scenes. Based on sensitivity analysis of the forward optical model, MERIS is capable of discriminating bleached corals from non-bleached corals to a sufficient degree to be practical down to depths of 10 m at least. We were able to discriminate bathymetry, major classes of live coral and sediment/rubble using MERIS. Although the results are preliminary it means that MERIS FR imagery may have the capacity to map coral reefs worldwide on a twice weekly basis. This could become a precursor to a global coral bleaching mapping system.

Sediments flows in the Great Barrier Reef lagoon as revealed by MERIS satellite data

The total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations obtained by the satellite remote sensing instrument MERIS were validated using in situ data acquired during a dry and a wet season in the vicinity of the Herbert River, central Great Barrier Reef region, Australia. The available MERIS imagery for the region covering 16 months in 2003-2004 was then compiled, and derived TSS distributions statisti...

Effect of sea surface temperature (SST) changes on coral ecosystems in Kish Island

Background and Theoretical Foundations: Coral reefs are one of the world's most attractive ecosystems. They have been covering large parts of the world in the tropic areas. Coral reefs in the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf are largely limited to the Islands. Many factors, including natural and anthropogenic activities cause stress to the reef communities affecting reef development. Coral bl...

Reef structure regulates small-scale spatial variation in coral bleaching

Coral bleaching is often characterized by high spatial variation across reef systems. Using a field survey and manipulative experiment, we tested whether the physical structure of coral reefs modifies environmental conditions that, in turn, influence spatial variation in bleaching in 3 scleractinian corals, Pocillopora verrucosa, Acropora elseyi, and Porites rus. Corals inhabit mainly the hard-...

Detection limits of coral reef bleaching by satellite remote sensing: Simulation and data analysis

Monitoring o f coral reef bleaching has hitherto been based on regional-scale, in situ data. Larger-scale trends, however, must be determined using satellite-based observations. Using both a radiative transfer simulation and an analysis o f multitemporal Landsat TM images, the ability o f satellite remote sensing to detect and monitor coral reef bleaching is examined. The radiative transfer sim...

Management implications of juvenile reef fish habitat preferences and coral susceptibility to stressors

In theHawaiianArchipelago, shelter-dependent juvenile stages ofmany reef fishes and their coral habitats are increasingly put at risk by multiple anthropogenic stressors (e.g. overfishing and habitat loss, coral bleaching and sedimentation, respectively). We assessed coral bleaching (to identify relative susceptibility among growth forms) and the use v. availability of structurally complex and s...
